As a production engineer, he found himself right at the intersection of engineering and production. “In practice, I saw that everything was linked together using Excel and Word,” he explains. “If something changed, you had to update it in multiple places.”</p><p>That way of working proved not only inefficient but also vulnerable. Especially in environments where products are still under development or are built to customer specifications, things quickly came to a standstill. Information became fragmented, and critical knowledge was primarily stored in the minds of experienced employees.</p><h2>The Transition from Engineering to Production</h2><p>According to Admiraal, the core of the problem lies in the transition from design to execution. Engineering describes what a product is, while production needs to know how it’s made. These two perspectives don’t naturally align.</p><p>For example, engineering works with a design-oriented bill of materials, organized by functions and modules. Production, on the other hand, requires a practical assembly sequence, including additional materials and specific steps on the shop floor. “That sequence and content differ substantially,” says Admiraal.</p><p>In practice, this translation is still often done manually. Work planners rearrange information, add parts, and adapt processes based on experience. As a result, tacit knowledge is applied time and again, but rarely documented in a structured way.</p><h2>The Assembly Process as the Central Source</h2><p>Baseboard takes a fundamentally different approach. In the software, you document the entire assembly process for each product: step by step, how a product is actually built. Based on that process, the corresponding work instructions, checklists, and bills of materials are automatically generated and kept up to date.</p><p>Through integrations with engineering systems (such as CAD, PDM, or PLM) and logistics systems (ERP), Baseboard connects the various departments and ensures that information remains consistent. Or as Admiraal puts it: it’s “like having an extra work planner walking around.”</p><h2>Capturing knowledge as it arises</h2><p>AI plays a practical role in effectively capturing this process knowledge. Employees can film and explain their work, after which the software converts this into a structured work instruction. “Normally, creating a work instruction for a complex product takes about 40 hours,” says Admiraal. “Now you can do it in just a few hours.”</p><p>The power lies not only in the video footage, but specifically in the explanation. By using audio, the reasons behind certain steps are also captured. This way, knowledge is not only documented but made immediately transferable the very moment it is created, without any additional administrative burden.</p><p>In the next step, the transfer of process knowledge can also be made more personalized. Consider work instructions that are automatically adapted to an employee’s language or level of experience, so that everyone receives exactly the information needed to perform the work properly.</p><h2>Knowledge as the Foundation for the Manufacturing Industry</h2><p>The result is that companies gain greater control over their production process. Instead of maintaining information in multiple locations, a single central source is created where processes, components, and knowledge converge. This leads to fewer errors, less manual work, and faster implementation of changes. At the same time, companies build a searchable and reusable foundation for their own processes.</p><p>Baseboard’s ambition is closely tied to where Admiraal’s career once began: connecting engineering and production.
