One-third of the food we produce each year does not end up on consumers’ plates. The United Nations identifies food waste as one of the most significant challenges in the field of sustainability and addresses this in Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 (SDG 12.3): halving food waste by 2030. Major retailers and their supply chain partners have joined forces in a coalition called “Champions 12.3” to actively contribute to this goal. The Netherlands has set a target to reduce food waste by 1 million metric tons per year by 2030 at the latest.</p><p>Getting fresh produce from the grower to the retailer on time requires complex logistics, especially since quality varies throughout the season and due to environmental factors such as the weather. With OneThird’s scanner technology, parties in the supply chain can “look” inside fruits and vegetables and thereby gain insight into their internal quality. By combining this data with external camera images and other relevant information, artificial intelligence is used to accurately determine the quality of the products. This provides valuable information, not only about shelf life but also about taste and ripeness.</p><h2>Avocados and Strawberries</h2><p>“With our unique predictive technology, quality inspectors throughout the food supply chain can quickly receive objective feedback on the shelf life and other quality parameters of fresh produce, such as avocados and strawberries,” explains Marco Snikkers, founder of OneThird. A lack of accurate information about the shelf life of fresh produce leads to unnecessary surprises in the supply chain, which can result in negative consumer experiences and food waste. “With accurate, real-time information on product quality, the various parties in the food supply chain can make better decisions about which products to transport where and at what price, thereby reducing food waste before it reaches the consumer.”</p>
