<p><strong>It was announced this month in Brussels that EuroHPC has awarded European funding for the construction of a Dutch AI factory in Groningen. Combined with the national and regional funding previously awarded, the establishment of the Dutch AI factory is now a certainty. The total amount of €200 million represents the largest investment ever made in a public digital research and innovation facility in the Netherlands. The AI factory will provide the Netherlands with an extremely powerful tool to drive AI developments. The AI Coalition for the Netherlands (AIC4NL), together with consortium partners SURF, TNO, and Samenwerking Noord, has taken the initiative and is now fully engaged in the project’s implementation, expecting the facility to be fully operational by 2027.</strong></p><p><strong>Author: AIC4NL</strong></p><p>“This is fantastic news,” says Willem Jonker, chairman of the board of AI Coalition 4 NL. “The AI Factory will serve as a development environment for new AI solutions and is therefore essential for building both a Dutch and a European AI industry. We’re developing AI Fair Tech as a counterbalance to AI Big Tech.”</p><h1>What is an AI factory? </h1><p>An AI factory is an advanced supercomputer for training and developing AI applications, embedded within a center of expertise where companies and researchers collaborate on new models and applications. The factory combines a powerful AI supercomputer with high-quality data infrastructure and associated datasets, supported by a team of specialized AI experts. Around this, a dynamic ecosystem is emerging of startups, scale-ups, companies, government agencies, and research institutions working together on innovation and the practical application of AI.</p><p>The AI Factory is being built in Groningen, enabling the region to develop into a major hub for AI innovation. The center of expertise will launch in 2026, after which the supercomputer will be operating at full capacity in 2027.</p><h1>Why is the AI Factory important for the Netherlands? </h1><p>The arrival of the AI Factory strengthens the Netherlands’ position in knowledge and innovation and stimulates the creation of new jobs, innovations, and automation in strategic sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and defense. The factory attracts talent, promotes collaboration between companies and research institutions, and reduces dependence on American and Chinese technology platforms.</p><p>In addition, the AI factory enables the responsible development and application of AI, fully in line with European regulations regarding privacy, ownership, security, transparency, and accountability. This allows applications to be developed based on European values, ensures that sensitive data remains within the Netherlands, and sustainably preserves the expertise that has been built up. In this way, the AI factory contributes not only to economic growth but also to social progress and strategic autonomy.</p><h1>Funding </h1><p>The total investment in the AI Factory amounts to €200 million: €60 million from the Groningen-based Nij Begun program, €70 million from various ministries coordinated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (EZ), and €70 million from the European EuroHPC program.
