The National Growth Fund finances further AI innovation through NOLAI

News Education

NOLAI, the national education lab for AI in primary, secondary, and special education, has received a grant of €63 million from the National Growth Fund, including €11.9 million unconditionally. This funding will be used for the further development of prototypes into products (co-implementation), a business development program, and the expansion of the scientific program.

Collaboration between education, science, and industry is central to NOLAI. This unique co-creation approach will continue with this grant through co-implementation, meaning that education and science will intensify their collaboration with innovative companies.

Co-Implementation Program

This second investment from the National Growth Fund enables scaling up prototypes developed by NOLAI in co-creation into products that contribute to the quality of Dutch education. These products will use smart technology in a relevant way and are designed to meet the direct needs of the education sector, making them highly interesting for companies.

The program will start with a pilot project involving Lucas Onderwijs and Snappet. Together with scientists, the adaptive learning environment of Snappet will be expanded with 'curriculum adaptivity'. This will provide teachers with more insight into student progress using predictive analytics and machine learning. For effective implementation, the collaboration between AI and teachers is crucial, and this pilot will pay significant attention to the support and guidance of teachers.

Business Development Program

The investment also allows for the creation of a development program for Dutch startups and scale-ups in the education market. Initially, this will be done in collaboration with Dutch EdTech, OostNL, Mercator Launch, Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, Brightlands Smart Services Campus, and EdTech Station.

This program will ensure that companies in the education market gain better access to a network of schools, knowledge, and expertise. These companies will also receive support to further develop and strengthen their competitive position, which will, in turn, contribute to the quality of Dutch education.

Scientific Program

High-quality digital learning tools and smart technologies are crucial for maintaining and enhancing the quality of education. It is essential to seize the opportunities that AI offers while addressing its risks. Therefore, NOLAI’s scientific program will be expanded to include research on the innovations and changes needed in education to enable broad and sustainable implementation of AI. This will allow NOLAI to develop, apply, and share new knowledge.
