Health

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is globally transforming the work of healthcare providers and how we manage the health of our citizens and care for our patients. The pace of this change is accelerating. AI offers significant opportunities to promote population health and alleviate the increasing pressure on the Dutch healthcare system.

The application of AI in healthcare is broad. AI models can bring about a shift from reactive to proactive healthcare systems (prevention). They can lead to faster and better diagnoses and treatments optimized for individual patients. AI can also provide insights that support better self-management of chronic diseases. On a national or even international scale, AI can be deployed to gain faster insights into and respond to epidemics. These are just a few examples. With multiple applications, AI can also contribute to providing the right care in the right place (at the right time).

The Netherlands has always been at the forefront of digitizing healthcare and developing the necessary infrastructure. Globally, significant investments in AI are being made. This is the moment to scale valuable Dutch AI applications together and to establish the necessary structural data infrastructure and other prerequisites (such as finance and knowledge). Together, we can create an environment to accelerate the adoption of innovations in AI in the healthcare sector. Source: www.nlaic.com

Healthcare & AI in Eastern Netherlands

In Eastern Netherlands, companies, knowledge institutions, governments, and healthcare organizations collaborate to develop medical technology that improves healthcare delivery—making it faster, less personnel-intensive, and more accessible and affordable for everyone.

In Eastern Netherlands, we focus on the following ecosystems:

  • Medtech Cluster Twente
  • Digital Health (Nijmegen and Twente)
  • Drug Discovery & Development (Oss and Nijmegen)

Within these ecosystems, we develop projects with entrepreneurs in Gelderland and Overijssel around themes such as Health & Wellbeing (prevention, remote care), Medical Imaging (decision support), Health Robotics, and (secure) data sharing. We collaborate closely with network organizations, knowledge institutions, and businesses. For the Health & AI domain, coordination is led by Radboud University, Radboudumc, University of Twente, the health research groups of Windesheim, Saxion, and HAN universities of applied sciences, and Health Valley. Key innovation clusters and collaborations include Health Valley, Briskr, One Planet Research Center, and TechMed Center.

ICAI Labs

ICAI is the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence. An ICAI Lab is a research collaboration between one or more industrial, governmental, or non-profit partners and one or more knowledge institutions. ICAI Labs focus on AI technology, are outward-facing, and aim at knowledge transfer. Within an ICAI Lab, at least 5 PhD students conduct research on a common topic. At Radboud University and Radboudumc, the following ICAI Labs have been established within the healthcare theme:

  • Donders AI for Neurotech lab
  • AI for Health lab
  • AI for Precision Health, Nutrition & Behavior
