Join us on November 28th at the DesignLab in Enschede for the AI in Robotics event, where we will focus on cross-sector innovation of AI in healthcare and agricultural robotics. Cross-sector innovation: learning from healthcare and agriculture robotics 

In this workshop, Jan Benders (HAN), Willem-Jan Lamers (Ambee) and Tim Kreukniet (Trabotyx) will explore the applications of the Robot Operating System (ROS) and how its use can be leveraged across diverse fields. ROS has seen significant development in sectors like automotive for tasks such as vehicle automation on public roads and within logistics. This expertise can be adapted for mobile robotics applications in agriculture and logistics-focused healthcare robots. 

Societal impact of AI in robotics: opportunities, challenges, and ethical considerations 

This workshop examines the societal impact of AI-driven, human-centered robotics, with Nikita Sharma (Valtes & University of Twente) and Bob Schadenberg (University of Twente) focusing on ethical considerations in detecting incidents among elderly individuals at home. The session addresses early detection, privacy, and acceptance among loved ones, highlighting the opportunities and challenges of creating supportive AI technologies. Additionally, it explores the question: should robotics be designed to appear humanized, or is a different approach preferred? 

Human-robot collaboration: enhancing efficiency and safety in complex environments 

This workshop explores diverse human-robot collaboration scenarios. Lenardo Gijsbertsen (Assistive Innovations) will share how AI enhances usability in eating devices and robotic arms for individuals with limited mobility. Willem-Jan Lammers (Ambee) will discuss AI's role in hospital logistics, addressing challenges like navigating crowded hallways. Finally, Erik Pekkeriet (Wageningen University & Research) will present advances in agricultural robotics, examining how animals, like cows, interact with robots compared to humans. 

Collaborative research in AI and robotics: success stories and future opportunities 

In this workshop, Job Oostveen (TNO) and Joke Bruining (TNO) will present the DigiAgri project, a collaboration among seven Dutch companies and four research institutions aimed at developing advanced agricultural robots for efficient, sustainable farming. The session will focus on project startup strategies and creating a business plan that benefits all consortium partners. Additionally, a healthcare-related project will be discussed, with more details to be announced next week. Finally, the session will explore the ideal environment to inspire and launch new projects, offering insights into building impactful, cross-disciplinary collaborations. 

Lessons from successful AI robotics implementations in healthcare and agriculture 

In this workshop, Bernke Papenburg (Rijnstate Robotics) will discuss both successful and challenging robot implementations at Rijnstate Hospital, including research on integrating robotics in healthcare and AI’s role in enhancing these solutions. Guido van Gageldonk (Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij) will then explore why many robotics solutions struggle to succeed in agriculture, focusing on the difficulties of reaching the “last mile” in development. He will highlight how AI can help bridge this gap, paving the way for successful robotics applications. 

Financing your AI and robotics research & development 

This workshop, led by Anne Bergen (University of Twente) and Steven van Roon (Robotics Centre University of Twente), explores various financing sources for AI and robotics projects, with a focus on creating powerful collaborations. Inspired by today’s spirit of partnership, we’ll identify participants interested in joining consortium projects and discuss strategies for building strong, sustainable partnerships. This workshop is just the beginning, as we will plan follow-up meetings to work towards successful project submissions. Join us to learn about the funding opportunities and build on your robotics consortium!
